Free Animals & Wildlife CNC Relief Heightmaps
Animal reliefs are the workhorses of a hobby CNC shop. A bear, a wolf, a bass, a whitetail buck, they make great gifts and they show off what a 3D relief does better than any flat engraving: deep fur, layered feathers, real dimension you can feel. Every file here is a 16-bit grayscale heightmap, so your CAM software reads the carve depth straight from the image. Drop it into VCarve, Carveco, or Aspire, set your stock size, and cut. Wood: Walnut, maple, and cherry hold fine fur detail well. Basswood and butternut carve fast and clean if you are cutting a lot of practice runs.
Finish: A wipe of Danish oil pops the grain and the shadows in the relief. A dark glaze rubbed into the deep cuts adds contrast.
Bits: Rough with a 1/8" or 1/4" ball nose, then finish with a 1/16" or 1mm tapered ball nose to catch the fur and eyes.
